Carbon Removal

Carbon removal is the process of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequestering it for permanent removal or sometimes using it for products like fuel. All IPCC scenarios to reach 1.5°C or even 2°C have accounted for massive amounts of carbon removal required, but have been light on details of which technologies they recommend. Many current technologies face large-scaling challenges due to energy and/or water requirements.

Problems & Ideas:

Direct air capture

Nature-based methods

Trees (Afforestation & Reforestation)

Soil carbon sequestration & measurement

Building materials that sequester carbon

Carbon mineralization

Enhanced weathering

Coastal blue carbon

New ocean measurement and reporting software (MRV)

Marine biomass

Increasing ocean alkalinity

YC Companies: <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/noya/">Noya, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/airmyne/">Airmyne, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/living-carbon/">Living Carbon, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/phykos/">Phykos, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/heimdal/">Heimdal, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/holy-grail-inc/">Holy Grail

Methane capture & removal

Methane is the second biggest greenhouse gas, with 30x more warming potential than CO2 over a 100-year time frame and a staggering ~85x more warming potential over a 20-year time frame. But batteries have one major drawback – the further you want to go and the bigger the vehicle the more batteries the vehicle needs and a bigger percentage of its weight are batteries. This is a problem for sectors like international shipping, long-distance aviation, and (although debatable) freight trucking. While batteries are improving fast, it is going to take a long time to make up for the 35x energy density of jet fuel. These are big markets: just aviation and shipping, both of which are growing fast, represent 20% of all transportation emissions in the world. Another big market opportunity for renewable fuels is energy storage. And it will take many decades to phase out all gas vehicles in the world, which creates a big need for transitionary drop-in fuel replacements.

Renewable fuels can be categorized into two categories: Electrofuels and advanced biofuels. Both are effectively powered by the sun.

Problems & Ideas:

More efficient and cheaper electrolyzers for hydrogen production

New microorganisms for biofuels

Infrastructure for green hydrogen storage

Innovation to drive down costs in woody biomass-based approaches to biofuels

Advanced biofuels

YC Companies: <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/prometheus/">Prometheus, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/phoenix-hydrogen/">Phoenix Hydrogen

Vehicle Breakthroughs

Approximately 75% of vehicle-based emissions are in categories that have obvious paths to electrification. The remaining 25% will need to either capture the emitted carbon, use renewable fuels, or will require a breakthrough in the technology available today in order to fully convert to electric alternatives. Here is a breakdown of emissions by hard-to-electrify vehicle category:

Aviation (11%): Difficult due to battery energy density to weight ratio. Short-haul electric aviation is currently difficult but possible, and with 45% of all global airline flights being under 500 miles, is an interesting near-term opportunity <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy22osti/80220.pdf/">x. Long-haul aviation does not currently have a generally accepted path to electrification, and the industry plans to transition to <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/blog/rfs-climatetech/#renewable-fuels\">Sustainable Aviation Fuel in order to mitigate emissions. Hydrogen is another potential alternative for long-haul aviation

Shipping (10%): Difficult for similar reasons to aviation, including needing a staggering amount of battery storage capacity for longer routes. Also similar to aviation, there may be some possibilities for short-haul electrification. For long-haul routes, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/blog/rfs-climatetech/#carbon-removal-carbon-capture\">CCS or <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/blog/rfs-climatetech/#renewable-fuels\">renewable fuels will likely provide emissions reductions.

Construction vehicles (4%): Very early category with limited progress to date.

Recreational boats (0.2%): While boats in this category “only” produce 12.5M tons of CO2e emissions, there may be other advantages to electrification in this category, such as reducing noxious fumes, noise, and the ability to fully benefit from renewable energy from solar, wind, and hydro generation.

Ideas:

Hybrid technologies that can reduce the majority of emissions by supplementing combustion power with electric power, without the need to fully convert or retrofit.

Boats (passenger and recreational)

New or retrofitted electric cargo ships

Semi-truck electrification - both for drayage and long-haul applications.

Electric construction vehicles

Electric work site power

Zero-emissions port vehicles and equipment

YC Companies: <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/cruise/">Cruise, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/heart-aerospace/">Heart Aerospace, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/sixwheel/">SixWheel, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/fleetzero/">Fleetzero, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/wright-electric/">Wright Electric, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/talyn-air/">Talyn Air, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://primelightworks.com//">Prime Lightworks, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/beyond-aero/">Beyond Aero, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/h3x-technologies/">H3X Technologies, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/regent/">REGENT, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/odys-aviation/">Odys Aviation, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/pyka/">Pyka, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/hypermile/">Hypermile, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/seaflight-technologies/">Seaflight Technologies <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/boundary-layer-technologies/">Boundry Layer

Advanced energy generation

Nuclear energy has already delivered carbon-free energy grids in countries like Sweden and France. This was done in record time but for decades the nuclear industry has been challenged by regulatory pressure and increased costs which led the industry growth to a stand-still (with South Korea and China as the exceptions). But public support for nuclear power is growing again and there are a promising new set of companies creating small modular reactors (SMRs). The majority of these are methane emissions of which beef production is its biggest contributor.

There are several ways startups are addressing this already. You can neutralize or reduce the emissions at the source – effectively making cows burp out less methane. This is a promising technology and would have an immediate effect on planetary heating but would still not account for the land-use impact of beef production.

The second major area startups have been addressing these emissions is by creating a new kind of alternative meat and dairy. There are two primary categories of startups: plant-based protein and cultivated/cultured meat. Plant-based companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are already worth billions of dollars but struggle with the costs of production. On the cultivated meat side there have recently been <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.fda.gov/food/food-ingredients-packaging/human-food-made-cultured-animal-cells/">regulatory breakthroughs giving us hope of these hitting the shelf soon.

Problems & Ideas:

Cheaper ways to produce plant-based protein and cultivated meat

Methane reduction/neutralization in beef production

Sustainable fertilizers

Soil carbon measurement tools (MRV)

YC Companies: <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/eclipse-foods/">Eclipse Foods, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/rebellyous-foods/">Rebellyous Foods, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/orbillion-bio/">Orbillion Bio, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/hedgehog-2/">Hedgehog, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/mooji-meats/">Mooji Meats, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/alga-biosciences/">Alga Bioscience, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/current-foods/">Current Foods, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/c16-biosciences/">C16 Biosciences, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/iron-ox/">Iron Ox, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/future-fields/">Future Fields, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/the-good-food-institute/">The Good Food Institute, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/shiok-meats/">Shiok Meats, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/micro-meat/">Micro Meat, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/numi-foods/">numi foods, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/brown-foods/">Brown Foods, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/nobell-foods/">Nobell Foods, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/ten-lives/">Ten Lives

Construction

The construction of buildings and infrastructure represents 13% of global emissions, with a majority of these emissions coming from the production of the raw materials required, such as concrete and steel. Given longer, hotter, dryer fire seasons, this extreme behavior is accelerating: as one example, 18 of the 20 worst fires in California history have occurred in the last two decades. Extreme fires cause damage to landscapes, watersheds, homes, and cities with stakeholders like insurance companies, landowners, utilities, and private businesses heavily impacted. Wildfire also contributes back to climate change in a negative feedback loop: studies estimate that 18% of global CO2 emissions are caused by fire and that recent wildfires have erased two decades of emissions reductions in California.

Most experts agree that the solution to wildfire lies in making landscapes more resilient to fire, protecting homes and cities, and enabling rapid detection and suppression when warranted. Warming is also causing sea levels to rise. This creates two broad categories of problems: too much water, and too little water.

Another major water trend is workforce turnover: as a set of water experts age out, agencies are having a difficult time filling the hole in the workforce. There is an opportunity to codify much of the knowledge and experience that is departing into software and automation.

“Too little water” Problems & Ideas:

Atmospheric water generation

Groundwater monitoring, management, and remediation

Future of desalination (though difficult for new tech to get off the ground due to heavy engineering and permitting overhangs)

Productive uses of desalination salt byproduct

Water sanitation and remediation of unwanted chemicals in the water supply

Non-contact sensing of chemical composition

Agricultural water circularity: managing runoff and reintroducing it into the top of the system

Reduce water use in industrial processes

Modified drought or heat-resistant crops

“Too much water” Problems & Ideas:

Disaster resilience in terms of preparation and recovery

Better approaches to applying floodwater to groundwater recharge

Stopping the impacts of rising water (e.g. where to pour the concrete for sea walls)

Brackish groundwater impacts of rising sea levels

Preparation and financial resilience for flooding

YC Companies: <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/waterplan/">Waterplan

Green Fintech

Finance is a strong and proven lever for decarbonization and is increasingly being tapped as an important part of the strategy toward decarbonization. A $27B “green bank” was created by the Inflation Reduction Act for projects that reduce GHG emissions, and financial institutions are beginning to offer better financing options for companies that are helping to reduce carbon emissions. With increased financing available, there is a new and emerging opportunity to create purpose-built fintech models suited to green project needs.

Ideas:

Solutions for automating and streamlining non-venture financing of climate tech. Carbon accounting software measures all emissions an organization/company is emitting. Usually using the <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.epa.gov/climateleadership/scope-1-and-scope-2-inventory-guidance/">Scope 1, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.epa.gov/climateleadership/scope-1-and-scope-2-inventory-guidance/">Scope 2 and <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.epa.gov/climateleadership/scope-3-inventory-guidance/">Scope 3 standards. Companies around the world are now being required to report emissions to customers, public markets, and financial institutions because they believe that reducing carbon is future-proofing the business.

Measuring carbon emissions with software is the first step in order to set reduction goals each year. Carbon accounting software can surface the exact emissions from utility providers, transportation fleets, and industrial emissions and give recommendations for alternatives. For emissions that are not easy to reduce they can buy offsets or removal credits. These offsets are usually purchased through a carbon removal marketplace.

Having a lot of carbon emissions is a financial risk to investors and lenders. As a result, the financial industry has started requiring disclosures and plans from companies before offering financing.

Carbon Accounting Software

The biggest category is carbon accounting software. Counting carbon emissions in an organization has historically been done manually with spreadsheets and consultants. All this will be replaced by software and we imagine both vertical and horizontal solutions.

Examples of vertical solutions are those that tackle specific industries or verticals like shipping, real estate, or industrials.

Carbon accounting software does a few things:

Measure a company’s carbon footprint

Help companies reduce their carbon footprint (e.g. recommendations)

Help companies offset carbon emissions

Help companies report on carbon emissions to public markets and regulatory bodies

Problems & Ideas:

Industry-specific carbon accounting

Software infrastructure for carbon accounting (Plaid for carbon accounting)

Supply chain integration of carbon accounting and procurement

YC Companies: <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/sinai/">Sinai, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/unravel-carbon/">Unravel Carbon, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/carbonchain/">CarbonChain, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/aklimate/">Aklimate, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/minimum/">Minimum, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/carbonfact/">Carbonfact, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/cambio-2/">Cambio, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/bend/">Bend

Carbon Offset and Removal Marketplaces

In order to reach the 1.5°C degree goal decarbonization alone is not sufficient – we also need massive amounts of carbon removal. We covered some of the promising ideas for carbon removal in the <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/blog/rfs-climatetech/#science-required\">science-required section. There are already many startups that finance, measure, and sell these carbon removal credits but the market is still small.

Historically carbon removal credits have had a bad reputation. The reason for this is that it was difficult to know if they actually had an incremental impact (additionality), whether they were long-lasting (permanence), issues with double counting, and how accurately they were measured. Climate change is one of the biggest problems we face as humans and we want YC to be part of driving these solutions. <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/10/07/climate/ipcc-report-half-degree.html/">Research indicates that stopping climate change requires both emission reduction and removing CO2 from the atmosphere.
\n
While we’ve funded a lot of great companies working on renewal energy like <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.thinkbright.mx//">Bright, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://buypower.ng//">Buypower, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://www.advanotech.com//">Advano, and <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://www.helionenergy.com//">Helion and will continue to do so, we’ve identified four frontier technologies to remove CO2 that we think deserve more research and attention. We worked with scientists on preliminary research into each category. These ideas press on the limit of what’s possible, and we’re not sure which side of that line they’re on. We know there are a lot of ideas out there, and want to take an expansive approach.
\n
We have conviction that it’s a worthwhile endeavor to remove CO2 from the air and transform it into something else useful or figure out how to store it safely, long-term. They may seem like moonshots now, but our goal is to try to come up with technically feasible solutions at realistic costs. On a micro level, we believe technology can help reverse the trend in K-12 of spending more and more money to achieve the same learning outcomes. We believe tech can also create alternatives in higher education that will prepare adults for the careers they want without the burden of excessive student debt.
\n
We encourage founders to apply to Y Combinator with education ideas. Here are a few categories of education applications that consistently stand out to us as interesting.
\n
Process automation for operational efficiency
\n
Many parts of the education machine haven’t yet been touched by tech. We pay attention to founders who intimately understand the workings of education systems and have smart ideas for using technology to improve onerous, manual processes. Some examples:
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.schoolmint.com//">SchoolMint understood that K-12 enrollment is an important process that largely happened on paper, requiring parents to stand in lines to sign their kids up for school, and requiring school administrators to manually enter student information into databases. SchoolMint streamlined the whole process and moved it online.
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://clever.com//">Clever understood that edtech vendors needed a better way to connect with student information systems at K-12 schools. They built an API, replacing systems that had either required edtech companies to develop custom connections for every school customer, or (even worse) required vendors and school administrators to email CSV files back and forth on a weekly or daily basis.
\n
Underserved markets
\n
We’re interested in classically disruptive ideas that use technology to make education affordable and accessible to audiences that otherwise have no options in the market. Great examples:
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://codehs.com//">CodeHS recognized that schools were not able to offer computer science courses because they didn’t have teachers with CS backgrounds. CodeHS created an online curriculum that made it possible for any teacher to teach CS, from foundational concepts to AP CS and beyond.
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://lambdaschool.com//">Lambda School recognized that there are people who would like to learn to code in order to get technical jobs, but who can’t afford the up-front cost of coding bootcamps or college courses. So they created a career-focused coding school that offers an income sharing model as an alternative to up-front tuition.
\n
New approaches to old ideas
\n
We’ve seen over a thousand edtech startups, and two of the ideas we see most frequently are tutoring marketplaces and learn-to-code programs. Both of these spaces represent interesting opportunities, but they’re competitive. We’re looking for companies that approach them in a unique way. Some examples:
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.vidcode.com//">Vidcode designed their learn-to-code program to appeal to non-traditional coders, specifically, teenage girls. Their coding lessons are based on things that interest their target audience, like Instagram filters and memes.
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.kodable.com//">Kodable has a unique focus on teaching computer science concepts to pre-readers.
\n
Tutoring turns out to be an especially challenging space. A tutoring company has to build a two-sided marketplace in a highly dispersed, competitive market with high churn. We believe there’s a lot of money to be made in tutoring, but we’re waiting to see a company go after tutoring in a truly unexpected way.
\n
Unusual business models
\n
We’re not afraid of companies with traditional education business models (i.e. selling to school districts), but we also like to see edtech companies with unique approaches to monetization. For instance, we believe there’s potential for a company to build a service that meaningfully connects schools and parents, and to charge parents for the service.
\n
New school models
\n
We’re interested in companies re-thinking the entire model of schooling, especially for pre-K and higher education. In the US, new models may rely on technology to personalize or otherwise improve the learning experience. We’re also interested in applications of technology that have the potential to deliver high quality educational experiences to every student in the world. An example:
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.rumie.org//">The Rumie Initiative curates free online educational content, packages it into comprehensive offline curricula, and delivers it to educators working in refugee camps and other remote or under-resourced communities.
\n
AI
\n
A teacher is still the most impactful factor in a student’s learning. We are looking for startups applying artificial intelligence to amplify teachers’ impact on students. We’re also interested in AI applied to large data sets to understand how students learn best.
\n
VR and AR
\n
Virtual reality and augmented reality have the potential to bring learning to life in completely new ways. VR devices have minimal penetration in schools today. We’re interested in startups that will change the way educators think about VR and AR by introducing new possibilities for teaching and learning.
\n","comment_id":"1100817","feature_image":"https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1531482615713-2afd69097998?crop=entropy&cs=tinysrgb&fit=max&fm=jpg&ixid=MnwxMTc3M3wwfDF8c2VhcmNofDJ8fGVkdWNhdGlvbiUyMHN0YXJ0dXB8ZW58MHx8fHwxNjcwMjcxNTAz&ixlib=rb-4.0.3&q=80&w=2000","featured":false,"visibility":"public","email_recipient_filter":"none","created_at":"2017-09-19T05:20:48.000-07:00","updated_at":"2022-12-05T12:18:33.000-08:00","published_at":"2017-09-19T05:20:48.000-07:00","custom_excerpt":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"custom_template":null,"canonical_url":null,"authors":[{"id":"61fe29e3c7139e0001a710a1","name":"Karen Lien","slug":"karen-lien","profile_image":"/blog/content/images/2022/02/karen.jpg","cover_image":null,"bio":"Karen Lien is an Edtech Principal at Y Combinator.","website":null,"location":null,"facebook":null,"twitter":null,"meta_title":null,"meta_description":null,"url":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/author/karen-lien/"}],"tags":[{"id":"61fe29efc7139e0001a71190","name":"Edtech","slug":"edtech","description":null,"feature_image":null,"visibility":"public","og_image":null,"og_title":null,"og_description":null,"twitter_image":null,"twitter_title":null,"twitter_description":null,"meta_title":null,"meta_description":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"canonical_url":null,"accent_color":null,"url":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/tag/edtech/"},{"id":"61fe29efc7139e0001a71173","name":"YC News","slug":"yc-news","description":null,"feature_image":null,"visibility":"public","og_image":null,"og_title":null,"og_description":null,"twitter_image":null,"twitter_title":null,"twitter_description":null,"meta_title":null,"meta_description":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"canonical_url":null,"accent_color":null,"url":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/tag/yc-news/"},{"id":"638a7d499132af0001d1aee9","name":"rfs","slug":"rfs","description":"Request for Startups","feature_image":null,"visibility":"public","og_image":null,"og_title":null,"og_description":null,"twitter_image":null,"twitter_title":null,"twitter_description":null,"meta_title":null,"meta_description":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"canonical_url":null,"accent_color":null,"url":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/tag/rfs/"}],"primary_author":{"id":"61fe29e3c7139e0001a710a1","name":"Karen Lien","slug":"karen-lien","profile_image":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/content/images/2022/02/karen.jpg","cover_image":null,"bio":"Karen Lien is an Edtech Principal at Y Combinator.","website":null,"location":null,"facebook":null,"twitter":null,"meta_title":null,"meta_description":null,"url":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/author/karen-lien/"},"primary_tag":{"id":"61fe29efc7139e0001a71190","name":"Edtech","slug":"edtech","description":null,"feature_image":null,"visibility":"public","og_image":null,"og_title":null,"og_description":null,"twitter_image":null,"twitter_title":null,"twitter_description":null,"meta_title":null,"meta_description":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"canonical_url":null,"accent_color":null,"url":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/tag/edtech/"},"url":"https://ghost.prod.ycinside.com/request-for-education-startups/","excerpt":"At YC, we’re deeply interested in education because of its power to transform lives and societies and to maximize human potential. The first is fake news. The business model for online media rewards the people who get the greatest number of page views, clicks and likes. That results in a system that prizes virality over truth. There are economic incentives for people to post whatever is the most shareable, and now it’s so easy to spin up a fake news site that even <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.buzzfeed.com/craigsilverman/how-macedonia-became-a-global-hub-for-pro-trump-misinfo?utm_term=.hwRAOV0pB#.qmA9JRqZE\">teenagers in Eastern Europe are making a living doing it. Building tools for fact-checking and helping people decipher fact from fiction will become increasingly important to keep the electorate informed.
\n
Second is the issue of protecting the freedom of the press. We need an unbiased, independent press to hold people in power accountable. Press also has the responsibility to use its voice and influence to protect those without money and power. We’re looking to fund tools that can help protect and defend journalists and their sources, or new revenue tools that can bolster and sustain independent media organizations.
\n
Future of Work: Jobs will look very different 25 years from now. We’ve already seen a massive shift toward automation, and the pace of technology’s impact on work isn’t slowing down. <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.weforum.org/press/2016/01/five-million-jobs-by-2020-the-real-challenge-of-the-fourth-industrial-revolution//">A study by the World Economic Forum estimates that in the next five years, 5 million jobs in 15 economies will be lost. We’re interested in what comes next. People seek full-time jobs for many reasons, including money, healthcare, and a sense of purpose. We’d love to see solutions that address each of these factors (or any others) in anticipation of a changing job market.
\n
Improving Democracy: There are thousands of ways technology can be applied to improve democracy. For democracy to function effectively, more of us need to be engaged and empowered. We’d like to see startups and non-profits who are using technology to make it easier and more appealing to get involved in the political process, and for that involvement to make an impact. We want technology that makes it easy to understand how new laws and programs impact you and your city’s budget, programs that teach young people and people from underrepresented groups how to run for office, and communication tools that make it easier for citizens to be heard by their representatives. In Summer 2016 we donated to <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.vote.org//">vote.org whose mission is to increase voter registration, and we think there’s more space for organizations solving voting problems too. We’d like to see tools that address problems in the voting process, such as voter suppression and gerrymandering, to name a couple of examples. Tech may be able to make a direct impact by measuring how people’s votes have been diluted, showing how representatives are less responsive to their constituents and empowering citizens to do something about it.
\n
We review applications on a rolling basis. <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://www.ycombinator.com/apply//">Apply here now.
\n","comment_id":"1098382","feature_image":"https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1523292562811-8fa7962a78c8?crop=entropy&cs=tinysrgb&fit=max&fm=jpg&ixid=MnwxMTc3M3wwfDF8c2VhcmNofDF8fGdvdmVybm1lbnR8ZW58MHx8fHwxNjcwMjcxNTQ2&ixlib=rb-4.0.3&q=80&w=2000","featured":false,"visibility":"public","email_recipient_filter":"none","created_at":"2017-01-31T01:59:31.000-08:00","updated_at":"2022-12-05T12:19:13.000-08:00","published_at":"2017-01-31T01:59:31.000-08:00","custom_excerpt":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"custom_template":null,"canonical_url":null,"authors":[{"id":"61fe29e3c7139e0001a710d1","name":"Y Combinator","slug":"y-combinator","profile_image":"/blog/content/images/2022/02/1200px-Y_Combinator_logo.svg.png","cover_image":null,"bio":"Y Combinator created a new model for funding early stage startups.
